Brasilia, the new capital

Brasilia is a unique capital city that was founded and built during the 1960s, making it one of the world's most recent capitals. The gigantic project was initiated by the then president, Juscelino Kubitschek. He decided to revive central Brazil which had been abandoned by industries and left with little activity. The semi-arid zone is called the sertão.

The project was directed by Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lucio Costa. Brasilia's architecture is distinctively modern. Oscar Niemeyer's style can be compared to that of Le Corbusier, although his style is lighter than the French architect's. The city of Brasilia is a testimony of Brazilian willpower and the work that characterises an era.

Brasilia is quite isolated, like a small island in the heart of Brazil, since there are few other large cities in the surrounding area. The city currently has a population of two and a half million inhabitants.

Discover Brasilia

Originally, Brasilia was designed for a population of 400 000 people. It currently has 6 times that amount. The Brazilian capital is an unusual stop during a trip to Brazil. The city will enchant those who love architecture.

During your stay, be sure to visit:

  • The Palace of Dawn, or the Palácio da Alvorada. It is the official presidential residence and one of Oscar Niemeyer's greatest works. The building is designed with light, bucolic architecture on three floors with an area of over 7000 m².
  • The Itamaraty Palace houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The unusual vertical architecture is surrounded by greenery and reflecting pools. You can admire many works of art inside the palace.
  • The Metropolitan Cathedral. A true architectural masterpiece, the cathedral can seat 4000 people. It is built as an immense, luminous volume shaped like a gigantic crown that points toward the sky. A must-see.
  • The Television Tower is the ideal place to go for a panoramic view of Brasilia. The tower measures 224 metres.
  • Three Powers Square. As its name indicates, the square is the seat of the government, with buildings for the executive, legislative and judiciary powers. You may also admire the amazing statues by Bruno Giorgi and Alfredo Ceschiatti.
  • The Sanctuary of Dom Bosco. A must-see for the gigantic stained glass windows that compose the main portion of the sanctuary's facade. When daylight shines through the windows, it creates a completely blue interior.
  • The National Museum. Worth the visit both for its saucer-shaped architecture as well as for its exhibits. There are also two auditoriums.
  • The Institute of History and Geography. You will learn everything about the history of the founding of Brasilia.

Relaxing in Brasilia

There are very few cities in the area surrounding the Brazilian capital. Brasilia's city park, one of the largest on the continent, is located only 10 kilometres from the city centre. It covers nearly 30 000 hectares and is an ideal place for relaxing walks and admiring the local fauna.

The city has a large selection of restaurants where you can enjoy all types of Brazilian specialities. There are many festivals and cultural events that take place year round in the capital. Again, don't hesitate to ask about events at the tourist office.

Finally, if you have time, don't miss a visit to the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, one of Brazil's most beautiful parks that is located about 200 km from Brasilia.
